Gagnon's Joke brings you up close and personal with the horrors of the Bosnian Servian conflict.
No Man's Land A Film by Danis Tanovic
Its the horrific story of 3 men caught in a war that no one remebers who started. Lost in the fog a Bosnian squad camps unknowningly close to the Serbian line. In the morning the squad is almost wiped out as they come underfire. Ciki, one of the soldiers manages to escape into a trench. Later he almost gets caught by a Serbian scouting party that is placing pressure mines under fallen Bosnian soldiers. However, a soldier that was rigged as a boobie trap isn't actually dead. This film is excellent and tragic, it shows the powerlessness of the UN due to heavy beauracratic restraints. It shows the power of ethnic hatred. It shows the horror of human technology. The film is spoken mainly in Serbo-Croatian, with some French and English.
Gagnon's Joke gives it a 6 pinky toe rating!
As always you need a thought provoking questions: When do you break all the rules to try to do what is right? Do you always do what is right? What if even after everything you do you haven't solved anything, was doing the right thing still worth it? Would you risk death attempting to do the right thing?
I would like to think I would break rules for doing the right thing. I do not always do the right thing, though most of the time, nothing is so black and white that there is one Right and one Wrong. Would I risk death? Of cource it depends: A cat in the road in front of a speeding car: I would yell but not run. A child in the road in front of a speeding car: I would yell and run. My Friend in the road in front of front of a speeding car: I would yell and move the earth itself.
But that assumes that we even deem it right to try to stop it. What is right and wrong could be debated for ever, so we will just say that saving someone is right.
